Patch Testing at DermConsult

Have you been suffering from a persistent skin rash, and you’re not sure what’s making it worse? Our patch testing services at DermConsult may be the answer.

At DermConsult, our specialist dermatologists provide private patch testing to uncover the cause of irritant contact dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis. Using the latest techniques in skin patch testing, we help patients in London and the surrounding areas understand their allergic reactions and manage their skin more effectively.

Learn More About Patch Testing

What is Patch Testing?

Patch testing is a specialist procedure performed in the dermatology clinic to determine if contact allergies are causing or worsening your skin condition. Substances that trigger a reaction, called allergens, can be found in everyday products at home, at work, or socially.

Patch testing is especially helpful for diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis, contact hypersensitivity, and other hypersensitivity reactions. Unlike skin prick tests or intradermal tests, patch testing identifies reactions that develop after prolonged contact with an allergen rather than an immediate response.

What Will Be Tested on My Dermatology Patch Test?

Our patch testing services examine the most common causes of contact skin reactions, including:

  • Metals (e.g., nickel)
  • Perfumes and fragrance components
  • Rubber chemicals
  • Preservatives
  • Cosmetics
  • Plants

Additional substances may be tested depending on your history or personal exposure. We can also test personal toiletries, or workplace products, to help identify the specific allergens responsible for your symptoms.

What to Bring to Your Skin Patch Testing Appointment

To make your skin patch testing as effective as possible, please bring:

  • A list of all medications you take (prescribed or over-the-counter).
  • All prescribed ointments or creams.
  • Personal products that may be causing your skin issues (toiletries, cosmetics, perfumes, nail/hair products). Bring both the product and the packaging showing ingredients.
  • Household products (cleaners, washing powders, fabric softeners) with the packaging showing ingredients.
  • Workplace chemicals, along with Health & Safety Data Sheets (COSHH), and any product samples.

Note: Not all items you bring will be tested directly on your skin.

What Does Our Patch Testing Services Involve?

At DermConsult, our patch testing services are designed to be safe, straightforward, and informative. The process usually takes place over three short clinic visits in about one week. This allows us to get clear test results without disrupting your routine.

First Visit

  • Small patches containing carefully selected substances are applied to your back (sometimes arms or thighs) using hypoallergenic tape.
  • Your back is gently marked to track each allergen.
  • Some itching is normal, but scratching is discouraged.
  • This visit usually takes around 2 hours.

Second Visit ( 48 hours later)

  • Patches are removed, and your dermatologist or dermatology nurse checks for reactions.
  • Additional patches may be added if required.
  • In some cases, we may use photopatch testing with ultraviolet light to identify reactions triggered by sunlight.

Third Visit

  • A final examination of your skin allows our dermatologist to review any reactions and explain what they mean for your condition.
  • Even if no reaction occurs, your patch test results are valuable for ruling out contact allergies.

Possible Side Effects of Patch Testing

Although rare, side effects from skin patch testing may include:

  • Persistent reaction at the test site (may last a few weeks).
  • A flare‑up of your existing eczema.
  • Temporary pigment change (skin colour may become darker or lighter) where patches were placed — may last for months.
  • Extremely rare: scarring (1 in 10,000).
  • Very uncommon: developing a new allergy to one of the tested substances (1 in 5,000); if this occurs, we will advise how to avoid that substance.

Our dermatologists will advise on allergen avoidance measures if a new allergic reaction is detected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Patch testing is used to identify allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis. It helps determine whether everyday substances such as cosmetics, metals, fragrances, or workplace chemicals are causing or worsening your skin condition.

No, patch testing is not painful. The patches are simply placed on your skin using hypoallergenic tape. You may experience mild itching or irritation during the test, but this is normal and usually temporary.

Patch testing at Derm Consult typically takes place over three appointments within one week. Each visit is relatively short, with the first appointment taking around two hours and follow-up visits usually much quicker.

You should avoid getting the test area wet during the testing period. This means avoiding showers that soak the back, swimming, and activities that cause excessive sweating, as this may affect your results.

Before your appointment, you may be advised to stop using certain topical creams, particularly steroid creams, on the test area. Your dermatologist will give you clear instructions based on your skin condition and medication use.
