What Will Be Tested on My Dermatology Patch Test?

To make your skin patch testing as effective as possible, please bring:

- All prescribed ointments or creams.
- Personal products that may be causing your skin issues (toiletries, cosmetics, perfumes, nail/hair products). Bring both the product and the packaging showing ingredients.
- Household products (cleaners, washing powders, fabric softeners) with the packaging showing ingredients.
- Workplace chemicals, along with Health & Safety Data Sheets (COSHH), and any product samples.
Note: Not all items you bring will be tested directly on your skin.

What Does Our Patch Testing Services Involve?
At DermConsult, our patch testing services are designed to be safe, straightforward, and informative. The process usually takes place over three short clinic visits in about one week. This allows us to get clear test results without disrupting your routine.
First Visit
- Small patches containing carefully selected substances are applied to your back (sometimes arms or thighs) using hypoallergenic tape.
- Your back is gently marked to track each allergen.
- Some itching is normal, but scratching is discouraged.
- This visit usually takes around 2 hours.
Second Visit ( 48 hours later)
- Patches are removed, and your dermatologist or dermatology nurse checks for reactions.
- Additional patches may be added if required.
- In some cases, we may use photopatch testing with ultraviolet light to identify reactions triggered by sunlight.
Third Visit
- A final examination of your skin allows our dermatologist to review any reactions and explain what they mean for your condition.
- Even if no reaction occurs, your patch test results are valuable for ruling out contact allergies.

Although rare, side effects from skin patch testing may include:
- Persistent reaction at the test site (may last a few weeks).
- A flare‑up of your existing eczema.
- Temporary pigment change (skin colour may become darker or lighter) where patches were placed — may last for months.
- Extremely rare: scarring (1 in 10,000).
- Very uncommon: developing a new allergy to one of the tested substances (1 in 5,000); if this occurs, we will advise how to avoid that substance.
