Successful skin surgery can be undertaken in as little as 10-45 minutes.

What is skin surgery?

‘Skin surgery’ refers to short procedures performed under a local anaesthetic. Normally, the function of skin surgery is to treat a skin problem on the spot, or to obtain a sample for testing under the microscope — known as a ‘biopsy’.

Conditions we can treat with skin surgery

Some minor skin conditions can be treated on the same day with skin surgery, although this is not always possible if more information is required. Examples include:

In some cases, a consultation may be required before the skin surgery is due to take place. For example, moles or skin lesions on the face or other sensitive areas may require additional consultation.

Other more serious operations, including skin cancer excisions and lipoma removals, will also need further consultation and will not be possible on the same day.

Benefits and risks of skin surgery

Benefits

Skin surgery is a quick, minimally invasive procedure which very often has a high success and satisfaction rate for patients. Sometimes it can be carried out on the same day, or after just one consultation — giving you peace of mind.

Risks

As with all surgeries, there is some risk involved. This varies depending on what condition you are having treated but could include discomfort, bleeding, potential scarring, delayed healing and scar formation.

Most of these risks tend to be minor, however, with bleeding resolving usually in the first 48 hours. Post-surgical infection of the treated site is also possible, especially in immunosuppressed patients.

Yes. We advise that you refrain from heavy lifting and straining for at least a week after procedures. If you’ve had a skin condition treated on the face, then you’ll want to avoid bending down (as this can lead to swelling).

For skin surgery carried out on limbs, we may recommend trying to keep the affected limb elevated to prevent swelling. We will talk you through everything you need to know in your consultation and answer any questions that you may have.

Yes. You can eat light meals, and we encourage you to stay hydrated. However, we must discourage alcohol consumption for at least two days after the procedure, as this may increase the risk of bleeding and delay healing.

Yes and no. This will depend on the work carried out. Sometimes, we will ask you to avoid getting the treated area wet for about a week after the surgery. Showers are usually okay, but we do not recommend baths with surgical wounds.
